Beyond Answers: Exploring Math Practices and Developing Math Reasoning with All Students (with Mike Flynn)

(Mini-Course)

By experiencing what it’s like to be a student engaged in the mathematical practices, teachers will develop a better understanding of the practices and how they can leverage them in the classroom to elevate students’ interest and sense-making.

Word Problem Types Involving Addition & Subtraction with Ann Elise Record

(Mini-Course)

Based on the research of Thomas Carpenter et al. in Cognitively Guided Instruction, there are 15 types of single-step word problems that involve addition and subtraction alone! In order for us to facilitate our students’ navigation through exploring all these problem types, we must first become familiar with them ourselves.

Number Sense in 3rd-5th with Christina Tondevold

(Mini-Course)

In this course you will learn fun ways to build your kiddos’ number sense in 3rd-5th grade. We will investigate how to build the number sense concepts along with how it makes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions so much easier. You will walk away knowing how to assess your students’ number sense, how to help them catch the number sense concepts, and how to help them use that number sense in other areas of math.

Each of the Mini-Courses comes with lots of resources to help you implement the ideas.  Check out each mini-course page for the resources.

Concrete-Representational-Abstract Approach to Teaching Math

(Pedagogy/Theory)

Concrete-Representational-Abstract approach to teaching math has been around for awhile.  However, it is usually done in a linear path.  In this video we will take a look at how we should be combining these three stages to build connections for students.  You will do a few math problems and look at how to solve each using the Concrete-Representational-Abstract approach.

Comparing Decimals

(Procedural/Conceptual 3-5 Course)

Learn about how we can compare decimals in ways that reinforce decimal number sense. We will explore comparing decimals using concrete manipulatives, visuals, and numberlines.

Adding Fractions

(Procedural/Conceptual 3-5 Course)

In this video, we explore how to add fractions using the concrete, representational, and then abstract progression so that we are not only determining sums efficiently, but also building our students’ fraction sense.

Number Sense in PreK-2

(Mini-Course)

In this course you will learn fun ways to build your kiddos’ number sense in PreK-2nd grade. We will investigate how to build the number sense concepts along with how it makes math content so much easier. You will walk away knowing how to assess your students’ number sense, how to help them catch the number sense concepts, and how to help them use that number sense in other areas of math.

Mathematical Games in PreK-2 with Dan Finkel

(Mini-Course)

In this mini-course, we’ll explore how to make Play The Engine of Learning by investigating what makes a great game, how to use them in the classroom to best effect, and what & how students learn as they play.

Mathematical Games in 3rd-5th with Dan Finkel

(Mini-Course)

Properly taught, games encourage a playful, engaging experience with mathematical ideas, and can motivate skills practice and exploration of deeper concepts. Dan will help you see how Play is The Engine of Learning by showing you a range of ways to use games in the classroom, and explore how his collection of favorite games can create a more robust understanding of arithmetic, estimation, strategic thinking, and more.

Where is Money in the Standards?

(Procedural/Conceptual Understanding PreK-2 and also in 3rd-5th)

Many educators are concerned that there are very little standards involving money.  This video will explain why and show you the TWO standards that actually mention money.

Decimal Sense

(Procedural/Conceptual Understanding 3rd-5th)

Learn about ways we can use concrete manipulatives and visuals to help our students develop their number sense around decimals.

Comparing Fractions

(Procedural/Conceptual Understanding 3rd-5th)

Learn about how we can compare fractions without resorting to tricks….there is no place for butterflies in math class! We will explore comparing fractions using concrete manipulatives, visuals, and numberlines.

Multiplication CRA Progression – This resource is designed as a general guide for how students can progress through the CRA progression to explore multi-digit multiplication before the algorithm is introduced and what we can do within each step to help students use strategies throughout the process rather than having them count by ones. This resource now accompanies the Strategies for Multi-Digit Multiplication video.

Division CRA Progression – This resource is designed as a general guide for how students can progress through the CRA progression to explore multi-digit division before the algorithm is introduced and what we can do within each step to help students use strategies throughout the process rather than having them count by ones. This resource now accompanies the Strategies for Multi-Digit Division video.

Subtraction CRA Progression – Here is a sample CRA progression of multi-digit subtraction with tips along the way to help our students move away by counting by ones. This resource now accompanies the Strategies for Multi-Digit Subtraction video.

Equivalent Fractions

(Procedural/Conceptual 3-5 Course)

Learn about how we can explore methods to determine equivalent fractions using visuals and various math tools.

Operating with Powers of Ten

(Procedural/Conceptual 3-5 Course)

Kids will see the pattern of just “adding a zero” when multiplying by a power of 10, but that “rule” doesn’t extend.  In this video we will look at how to help kids understand what’s really happening when multiplying and dividing by powers of 10.

Classifying Triangles

(Procedural/Conceptual 3-5 Course)

In this video you will learn the progression of standards that lead up to children being able to classify triangles as well as how to help children classify triangles by both their sides and angles.

Math Fact Progression of Strategies – For each operation, there is a suggested progression of strategies as recommended by Dr. Nicki Newton within her research-based Math Running Records. Explanations of the strategies as well as the math facts within each set will be described in a way intended to be sent home to parents.

Addition CRA Strategy Progression – Here is a suggested progression from concrete to representational to abstract exploring the concepts of multi-digit addition. The use of Cuisenaire rods and drawing representations using subitizing dot patterns makes this progression particularly powerful. This resource now accompanies the Strategies for Multi-Digit Addition video.

Free Universal and Number Sense Math Screeners – Inside the Build Math Minds Facebook group we get asked a LOT about math screeners and assessments. This cheat sheet is list of the FREE screeners and assessments that were shared by Build Math Mind members. This is NOT an endorsement of the assessments, but instead a summary of some to investigate and see if they meet your needs.

Math Fact Strategy Flashcards -A set of flashcards will be shared for each operation with suggested strategies listed on the back side of the flashcards with an explanation of a strategy sort activity that can be done with the flashcards to help build flexible thinking.

Number Sense Scope & Sequence

(Procedural/Conceptual PreK-2 Course)

How should standards in your grade level be grouped and organized throughout the year?  How does number sense help you meet those standards?  This scope & sequence gives you ONE suggested progression that you can use to help guide your instruction in grades PreK through 2.

Managing the Sharing of Strategies/Representations

(Implementation Course)

Allowing kids to solve problems in whatever way they want is essential….but when letting them share all those ways can be overwhelming and feel like a waste of time.  This video shows how to use the ideas of the 5 Practices book to manage the sharing of different strategies and representations.
