Addition Fact Flashcards with Strategies

Access to StrADDegy – This is normally a paid site, but BMM members now have access for FREE!!! StrADDegy is a learning portal for teachers that gives you lessons, activities, stories, etc to help your students explore early number sense and develop their flexibility with addition & subtraction facts. It is one of my favorite online sites and I’m so excited to be giving you all access for free!!

Accessible Mathematics Book Study

The Accessible Mathematics Book Study will be starting.  The books were back ordered and so we are delayed in receiving them.  If you didn’t submit your mailing address, then you can purchase the book yourself and still participate in the book study.  Ann Elise Record will be posting prompts each week for you to comment on inside the Book Study area.

Concrete-Representational-Abstract approach to teaching math has been around for awhile.  However, it is usually done in a linear path.  In this video we will take a look at how we should be combining these three stages to build connections for students.  You will do a few math problems and look at how to solve each using the Concrete-Representational-Abstract approach.

Comparing Decimals

Learn about how we can compare decimals in ways that reinforce decimal number sense. We will explore comparing decimals using concrete manipulatives, visuals, and numberlines.

Adding Fractions

(Procedural/Conceptual 3-5 Course)

In this video, we explore how to add fractions using the concrete, representational, and then abstract progression so that we are not only determining sums efficiently, but also building our students’ fraction sense.

Based on the research of Thomas Carpenter et al. in Cognitively Guided Instruction, there are 15 types of single-step word problems that involve addition and subtraction alone! In order for us to facilitate our students’ navigation through exploring all these problem types, we must first become familiar with them ourselves.

Operating with Powers of Ten

(Procedural/Conceptual 3-5 Course)

Kids will see the pattern of just “adding a zero” when multiplying by a power of 10, but that “rule” doesn’t extend.  In this video we will look at how to help kids understand what’s really happening when multiplying and dividing by powers of 10.

Classifying Triangles

(Procedural/Conceptual 3-5 Course)

In this video you will learn the progression of standards that lead up to children being able to classify triangles as well as how to help children classify triangles by both their sides and angles.

Math Fact Progression of Strategies – For each operation, there is a suggested progression of strategies as recommended by Dr. Nicki Newton within her research-based Math Running Records. Explanations of the strategies as well as the math facts within each set will be described in a way intended to be sent home to parents.

Addition CRA Strategy Progression – Here is a suggested progression from concrete to representational to abstract exploring the concepts of multi-digit addition.The use of Cuisenaire rods and drawing representations using subitizing dot patterns makes this progression particularly powerful. This resource now accompanies the Strategies for Multi-Digit Addition video.

Free Universal and Number Sense Math Screeners – Inside the Build Math Minds Facebook group we get asked a LOT about math screeners and assessments. This cheat sheet is list of the FREE screeners and assessments that were shared by Build Math Mind members.
