Standards: The Benchmark Numbers

The “Benchmark Numbers” play a big role in three types of standards.  In this video I give an overview of how the benchmark numbers help children Compare, Add/Subtract/Multiply, and understand Place Value.

This is so obvious yet so mind-blowing at the same time. How awesome it is that we can look at numbers in so many different ways and do everything to make math meaningful and friendly for our students and children!

I agree that using base ten blocks can be tricky because students see the 10 stick as a ‘one’. I started using coffee stirrers and rubber bands (a borrowed idea to be sure!) to show ones, groups of ten, and groups of 100 before using place value blocks. It was a nice change in manipulatives and coffee stirrers can be purchased at Sam’s Club (5000 for $6-$7) so it was a win-win!
